Portrait of a Strong Woman

Don’t worry about what other people do,
Just Do You.

Artistic Inspiration

Matisse Women
Turkish Princess and Woman with a yellow hat

I am who I am.
I was created to be me.
I’m perfectly imperfect.
I’m not the best artist, but I’m not the worst.
I’m the best I can be, that’s me.
I have an overbite, I have poor sight.
But I can speak for what I believe and
see beauty around me.
I make the best of what I’ve got
And fill in where I have not.
I’m strong,  brave,  driven, creative,
Encouraging, positive, faithful, thrifty...
I’m me.
I could say what I’m not, but wHat good would it do?
I’m me through and through
And you are you.
I use What God have me to the best of my ability.
That’s me.

As I grow older, I am happier with myself.
I remember when I was young, I was so lost and had no idea of my ID.
I was looking to others to show me who I was.
What was my purpose? What was I good at?
I was always looking up to other women who knew who they were and lived with confidence.
My neighbors, my friend's moms, my teachers and even strangers helped shape my identity.
In order to find out who I wanted to me, I had to know what I DIDN"T want to be.

I found people that I have never even met that I identified with.
I realize that when I admire something about a person, it is really a hunger to grow that part of myself. If I admire a characteristic enough, I try to find that inside myself.

I really love Iris Apfel.
She makes up her own style based on her own rules. She is an inventor of herself.
She does what makes HER happy. She just does her own thing.
I drew these picture of her because she inspires me to be more... well, me!

I think once we find out who we are not, it is easier to find out who we are...
That's why I love this song so much.
JJ Heller
I'm not the money I make, I'm not the man I love,
I'm not a photograph, I'm not

I figured out a person can be multifaceted.
You can have different styles depending on your moods.

Part of loving yourself is embracing your flaws that cannot be changed.
It's about gaining confident in who you are even if it's not perfect.
I have an overbite which makes me a mouth breather.
But I love it. I embrace it.
like this poster?
Get it here...

Frida Kahlo had legs that wouldn't work right and were mis-shaped.
Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she wore long skirts and fancy shoes.
She had a slight unibrow, but accentuated it to make her unique looking.
If you can't change it, embrace it!
She wore accessories as decoration to take your notice of the negative and see the positive.
She became a strong woman fashion icon for this. He weaknesses made her stronger.

Hand Painted Love Gifts...

My Wonderful Mother in Law is the bomb mom! She watches out silly 2 girls all day (M-F) and doesn't want a dime. She does our stinky laundry without complaining and so much more. We are so blessed (or spoiled maybe)! Anything I can do to make her happy with my creations is the absolute least I could do. Creating for others is my love language! She gets this catalog called Sundance... well it is like way expensive but has beautiful stuff inside. Robert Redford own the brand and he has super amazing style.
Well, she saw this painting by Rebecca Puig with a dog and a man and was wondering if I could paint something similar to it for her. She wanted me to make it a woman and a cat instead. I was excited because I really like a lot of things about this painting she presented. Here is how it turned out...

Original Rebecca Puig Painting

My M.I.L "Graham" and a cat.
She feeds and adopts strays occasionally.
She is feeding the kitty love from her palm.
My favorite thing about it is the way the kitty has little bitty hairs poking out of the tip of it's ears
and her hat tie has the same strings poking out of it.
I did not want to "copy" Puig's painting, so I took what I liked and changed things I wanted.
It is more inspired than copied. I liked her colors and simplicity of form.
I did not want my caregiver to be empty handed though. So, the hearts came in...

I liked the one for Graham so much that I decided to do a similar one for my parents.
They have birthdays and such around this time, so I thought it would be a good idea.
I got my Mom on perfectly fitting her personality! She always wears the same black sweater vest even if it is in the middle of the desert, she will not take it off. It is her security blanket or some sort...
But, my dad was not quite right... so i had to sit and ponder what to do...
I was using a recycled board that a previous artist(?) had started using and never finished.
(captures my LostSock theory of course!).
It had a big blue line going across it and my paint did not want to cover it, so this is
before I got rid of the blue diagonal line ...

This is the final result of my Parent's painting.
I love it so much. My parents are hilarious and I wanted to capture every awkward lovable thing about them here.
They are the best and that is why I did this for them. They better like it... (sike).

American Gothic Spoofing

For so long, I have been in love with the famous American Gothic painting by Grant Wood.
I just love the moody mystery behind the portrait.
But it is funny the real story behind the portrait.
Since I love the painting, I create my own spoofs of it often.

I also teach my art students about the painting every year and have my 6th graders do a spoof of the painting. Here are some examples...
