Portrait of a Strong Woman

Don’t worry about what other people do,
Just Do You.

Artistic Inspiration

Matisse Women
Turkish Princess and Woman with a yellow hat

I am who I am.
I was created to be me.
I’m perfectly imperfect.
I’m not the best artist, but I’m not the worst.
I’m the best I can be, that’s me.
I have an overbite, I have poor sight.
But I can speak for what I believe and
see beauty around me.
I make the best of what I’ve got
And fill in where I have not.
I’m strong,  brave,  driven, creative,
Encouraging, positive, faithful, thrifty...
I’m me.
I could say what I’m not, but wHat good would it do?
I’m me through and through
And you are you.
I use What God have me to the best of my ability.
That’s me.

As I grow older, I am happier with myself.
I remember when I was young, I was so lost and had no idea of my ID.
I was looking to others to show me who I was.
What was my purpose? What was I good at?
I was always looking up to other women who knew who they were and lived with confidence.
My neighbors, my friend's moms, my teachers and even strangers helped shape my identity.
In order to find out who I wanted to me, I had to know what I DIDN"T want to be.

I found people that I have never even met that I identified with.
I realize that when I admire something about a person, it is really a hunger to grow that part of myself. If I admire a characteristic enough, I try to find that inside myself.

I really love Iris Apfel.
She makes up her own style based on her own rules. She is an inventor of herself.
She does what makes HER happy. She just does her own thing.
I drew these picture of her because she inspires me to be more... well, me!

I think once we find out who we are not, it is easier to find out who we are...
That's why I love this song so much.
JJ Heller
I'm not the money I make, I'm not the man I love,
I'm not a photograph, I'm not

I figured out a person can be multifaceted.
You can have different styles depending on your moods.

Part of loving yourself is embracing your flaws that cannot be changed.
It's about gaining confident in who you are even if it's not perfect.
I have an overbite which makes me a mouth breather.
But I love it. I embrace it.
like this poster?
Get it here...

Frida Kahlo had legs that wouldn't work right and were mis-shaped.
Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she wore long skirts and fancy shoes.
She had a slight unibrow, but accentuated it to make her unique looking.
If you can't change it, embrace it!
She wore accessories as decoration to take your notice of the negative and see the positive.
She became a strong woman fashion icon for this. He weaknesses made her stronger.

Shorts with Tights... Awkward or Awesome?

J. Crew Sock Ad
Had to try on a few pairs before I found the right price...
These were at NYC but they were a little too high priced...
I passed on them.

I finally decided on a green pair from Target.
I am wearing them here with thrifted vest and shirt from Goodwill.
Boots from Minnatonka, and tights from WalMart.

What I Wore Wednesday-Fashion Week 2

Ok, I have been inspired by What I Wore Wednesday
from The Pleated Poppy blog.
It is hard to take a picture everyday of what I wear.
Usually, the days I feel that I look my best are the days I never get around to posing for the camera..
I have to have time and get my supportive husband to grab his camera too.
I feel ridiculously narcissistic asking him everyday.
"Honey, take a picture of me!"
But I am going to try, I already had a serious talk with him about how important this is!
Fashion is top priority this week or our marriage is on the line
(Sike! ha ha).

But seriously. I feel so excited and honored to be asked to speak to a group of pre-teen Christian girls this week at a Middle School FCA slumber party about sensible and inexpensive fashion.

???BEAUTIFUL YOU???
God wants us to each be the best we can be in every way, inside and out.
If we neglect our bodies and image, we are really neglecting a Masterpiece that He designed.
If you feel weird saying that you are a "Master Piece", then think about it this way.
You are a piece that was created by the MASTER!
If you feel that is still wrong, then you are insulting the one that created you, the artist that created every artist, the creator of all creation!!!
So, just admit it... YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL!

The focus is on sensibly taking care of the beauty that God gave you
without letting it carry you away to fantastical vanity land.
(Everyone in that land is a snob!)
I want to teach girls that fashion does not have to be expensive and style is not meant to make you feel better than others around you, but just better about yourself.
Anchor pieces help us remember these important things...

Since Anchor Pieces can be cheap, the key is quality over quantity.
And it's not about how much we have, but how good it makes us feel.

I hope one day to get this design of mine tattooed onto me.
It is an anchor piece, helping me to always be focused on the treasure of Heaven rather than earth.
All things we buy and adorn ourselves with are fun for today,
but tomorrow they will be gone.
So, be mindful to never let them take over your heart.
It is the things we adorn our heart with that will be everlasting, the things we cannot see to be with us eternally...
2 Corinthians 4:16=18
"Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by dayFor momentary, light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, while we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal".
another design I created while
Meditating on the same verse...

2 Corinthians 5:17
Another possible tattoo design used as an "anchor" for my life.
Christ transformed me into something marvelous.
I am not at all who I used to be!
God salvaged me and gave me colorful wings of the spirit.
Rather than these wings carrying me away,
May these wings bring me closer to my Creator everyday...

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

Althougth Thifty Fashion is very close to my heart now as an adult,
It has not always been.
As a child I was highly embarrassed by my thrifty mother who would regularly drag us on her thrift excursions,
if you want to see examples of this part of my life..
